May 2008 - CSS Stamps Out High Electricity Costs

Connecticut Spring & Stamping, an international precision parts manufacturer, found that lean initiatives enable the company to operate more efficiently, more green and with a savings to operating costs.

The Director of Lean Initiatives, Gaston Pelletier, has a goal for all departments and employees to strive for efficiencies in the reduction of waste and the improvement of processes.

The Facilities Manager, Joe Tourville uncovered energy saving opportunities with the electricity deregulations. He was able to receive competitive price quotes resulting in huge cost savings for operations of the spring and metal stamping manufacturing plant. In 2006 Joe Tourville began researching the electricity deregulations. A meeting with energy broker, Mark Longhi from Northeast Energy Partners (NEP neEnergyPartners.com) was the beginning of a successful partnership and an opportunity for tremendous electric savings.

The plant runs two shifts a day from 6:00 a.m. to midnight with a monthly usage of 300,000 kWh. By the end of 2006, an October contract with TransCanada Power Marketing revealed a savings of $5,000. In 2007 the dramatic savings were approximately $55,000 over the open market rate. Electric savings for 2008 are continuing!

Connecticut Spring and Stamping has taken many steps to conserve energy, one successful step was to switch to energy efficient lighting. With the deregulation of natural gas, the next step is to have Northeast Energy Partners provide a trend analysis and gas energy-saving options. Additional initiatives include the procurement of an innovative air compressor that will generate air and heat that is expected to reduce the manufacturing operating costs by an additional $18,000-$23,000.
