New in-house apprenticeship program expands training to meet growth

Farmington, CT - Connecticut Spring & Stamping (CSS), a manufacturer of precision parts for the medical, aerospace, firearms and defense industries worldwide, announces that it has expanded its structured in-house apprenticeship program to include spring coiler setup operations for all the lines in the company’s spring division. The in-house program was created to train enough skilled workers to increase the company’s capacity and continue its rapid growth rate.

Under the direction of a retired expert spring coiler who serves as training instructor, and in-house facilitators who help guide the certification process, apprentices are trained in tasks assigned to basic, intermediate, and advanced competencies. Separate tracks have been established for the positions of spring machine operator/set up, looper operator/set up, and computer controlled spring machine operator/set up. Established metrics are used to assess progress, and the apprentice will receive an increase in compensation after successfully completing each competency. In addition, apprentices will be trained by the quality department in how to perform quality functions, and will be certified for first article approval.

The program adheres to guidelines established by the past state apprenticeship program for becoming a certified skilled worker in Connecticut, but is structured around achieving a competency level rather than completing any specific number of training hours. Conducted in a new purpose-built training facility, the program uses production-capable machines dedicated to the training process.

“We are excited to round out our very successful in-house apprenticeship program with the new spring and coiling operations component,” says Kathy Bellemare, director of human resources at CSS. “We are finding that our apprenticeship program is helping to fill critical positions with well-trained employees, which is a huge help to ensuring our continued growth.”
