Workplace method demonstrates superior level of cleanliness and organization

Farmington, CT - Connecticut Spring & Stamping (CSS), a manufacturer of precision parts for the medical, aerospace, firearms and defense industries worldwide has launched a “5S” workplace organization process at its manufacturing facilities to demonstrate its commitment to a superior level of cleanliness and orderliness required by its growing base of medical customers.

The 5S program, which refers to steps taken to sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain, is an integral part of CSS’ larger lean manufacturing initiatives. As a key building block of the company’s lean program, the 5S process is focused on customers, particularly medical customers for whom cleanliness is a must for doing business. Other related benefits of the 5S program include raising quality, promoting safety, lowering costs, building customer confidence, increasing factory up-time, and lowering repair costs.

“Ultimately, the 5S program relates back to every goal we have established and the lean steps we are taking to continually improve our quality and ensure on time delivery,” said Bill Stevenson, President of CSS. “We recognize that it is a culture change and are committed to a sustainable process that provides positive motivation to our workforce, which has embraced the effort. Our slogan is – If we claim to be lean, we need to be clean.”

The CSS 5S process is led by an 8-person team of CSS officers and team leaders who participate in a weekly “gemba walk,” in which the team goes to the floor to look for practical improvements in the 5S areas. The team provides suggestions to each of the company’s self-directed work teams, and documents progress.

A variety of tools are provided, including checklists, forms and a centralized area for viewing a photographic record of steps taken and results of initiatives. The last step, sustain, includes a documented procedure outlining specific roles, responsibilities, and a schedule to ensure the work done is maintained.
